Green Sea Turtles Showcase a Very Unique Vegetarian Diet
Green sea turtles are highly unique among marine reptiles because they are primarily herbivores. They pass their time consuming massive amounts of seagrasses and wild algae. This specific diet alters their internal body chemistry in a surprising way. The pigments from the plants give their internal cartilage and fat a distinct greenish tint. This internal coloration is the true origin of their common name rather than the color of their upper shells.
The Intense Journey of Nesting and Underground Clutches
Adult females deposit their eggs inside a deep nest that they carefully dig into the sand using their powerful rear limbs. A gathered group of these eggs is officially called a clutch. The mothers usually lay around one hundred to one hundred and twenty five eggs inside each individual nest. They will repeat this exhausting process multiple times over several months, usually spacing the events about two weeks apart. The young hatchlings emerge from the eggs roughly two months later and immediately begin digging their way up out of the sand. This collective escape process generally takes a few days to complete. Once they finally surface, the tiny reptiles hurry down the beach toward the breaking waves and make their way directly into the open ocean. They face an immense number of deadly threats during their lives. The few individuals that successfully survive to adulthood live for many decades.
How Sand Temperatures Shape the Future Gender Balance
The ambient temperature of the surrounding sand plays a vital role in their reproduction. The gender of the developing reptiles is determined entirely by the thermal conditions inside the nest during incubation. Cooler incubation temperatures produce exclusively male hatchlings. In sharp contrast, warmer incubation temperatures yield exclusively female hatchlings. Temperatures that fluctuate evenly between these two extremes will produce a balanced mix of both male and female offspring. Modern researchers are currently tracking alarming global trends as atmospheric temperatures continue to rise steadily, which results in fewer male reptiles hatching from traditional nesting beaches.
Specialized Beaks Built for Hunting Reef Sponges
Hawksbill turtles are typically found occupying vibrant coral reefs. These underwater structures are home to their absolute favorite prey, which consists mostly of marine sponges. The unique shape and extreme sharpness of their beak enables them to reach deep into tiny holes and narrow crevices within the coral reefs to extract food.
The Rare Daytime Nesters of the Reptile World
The vast majority of marine reptiles prefer to come ashore under the cover of darkness. The Kemp's ridley variety represents a fascinating exception to this rule. They are the only species that routinely nests during the bright daylight hours.
Ancient Dinosaurs and Massive Transoceanic Migrations
Leatherback sea turtles have existed in their current physical form since the age of the dinosaurs. They are highly migratory animals that regularly perform incredible physical feats. Some individuals swim more than ten thousand miles every single year between their nesting beaches and their distant foraging grounds. They are also highly accomplished divers that can descend to nearly four thousand feet below the surface, which is significantly deeper than the limits of most marine mammals. They possess unique spiny structures lining their mouths and throats. These sharp spines help them securely trap and consume slippery jellyfish, which serve as their primary food source.
The Open Ocean Childhood of Mighty Loggerheads
Loggerhead turtles spend the first seven to fifteen years of their lives floating entirely within the open ocean. They eventually migrate to shallow coastal areas closer to land where they continue to grow and mature. Researchers utilizing advanced satellite tracking have discovered that Pacific loggerheads undertake a massive developmental journey. The tiny hatchlings enter the sea from nesting beaches located in Japan and Australia. Some individuals then undertake a trans-Pacific migration across the entire ocean to reach rich feeding grounds located off the coasts of Mexico, Peru, and Chile. This incredible journey spans nearly eight thousand miles.
Streamlined Bodies That Never Hide Away
Unlike their terrestrial cousins, marine reptiles are physically unable to retract their limbs or heads into their protective shells. Their permanently exposed bodies feature highly streamlined shells and large paddle-shaped flippers. These physical traits make them incredibly agile and graceful swimmers in the open water. They utilize their large front flippers for powerful propulsion while their rear limbs act exactly like rudders for precise steering.
The Massive Synchronized Arrivals Known as Arribadas
Certain species gather together to lay their eggs in massive synchronized groups. This spectacular phenomenon is called an arribada, which is the Spanish word for arrival. Only the Kemp's ridley and the olive ridley display this unique mass nesting behavior. During one of these events, thousands of females gather offshore before storming the beach in huge numbers over a period of several hours. Scientists believe these events are triggered by offshore winds, lunar cycles, and the release of pheromones by the females. Laying all their eggs at the exact same time serves as a vital survival strategy. It completely overwhelms local predators and significantly increases the survival rate of the hatchlings.
The Underwater Sleep Cycles of Deep Sea Divers
These creatures are master divers that can remain deep underwater for extended periods of time. They are air-breathing reptiles but possess the unique biological ability to remain submerged for hours under natural conditions. They even sleep comfortably while resting completely underwater. The vast majority of species spend their entire lives at sea, only returning to dry land to lay eggs. However, certain green turtle populations in the Pacific Islands regularly crawl onto the sand simply to bask in the warm sun.

A Good Bowl of Borscht Can Change Your Life
The best bowl of borscht I ever tasted came from a punk house in the summer before I turned eighteen. At that point, I had already been on my own for nearly two years, drifting between whoever would take me in after my mother left town. I survived mostly on whatever vegan food I could scavenge or afford, eating a very simple, carb-heavy diet that kept me going but not much more.
