Lockheed Martin collaborated with Submergence Group, LLC to design and, in partnership with Germanischer Lloyd, to commercially classify the S301i dry manned submersible. Following this, Lockheed Martin and Submergence Group advanced the design to the next-generation vehicle, the S302.
Both models are dry submersibles capable of carrying two operators (a pilot and navigator) along with up to six divers, allowing personnel to lock out and re-enter the vehicle underwater. The one-atmosphere dry environment of these submersibles offers a superior alternative to conventional wet submersibles used today by U.S. and allied Special Forces, ensuring operators arrive at their mission site in optimal physical condition.
S302 Enhancements
The S302 incorporates many components from the operationally validated S301i platform while featuring upgraded hydrodynamics and propulsion systems that enhance overall performance.
These vehicles are equipped with an Inertial Navigation System (INS) and Doppler Velocity Log (DVL) to aid in navigation, an Underwater Telephone (UWT) and UHF radio for communication, along with obstacle avoidance sonar and a fathometer. Additional sensors can be installed to meet specific mission objectives. The S302 builds on the proven hardware of the S301i while incorporating design and propulsion improvements that boost operational efficiency.
Availability and Support
The S301i is available for both lease and purchase, while delivery of the S302 will be tailored to customer requirements. Lockheed Martin and Submergence Group can deploy a commercially classified vehicle to the client’s designated site and prepare it for operational use. Both companies can provide hands-on operator training, maintain the vehicle during the lease period, or manage all logistics for purchased units for U.S. or international clients. Additionally, Lockheed Martin and Submergence Group can support operational assessments at the customer’s request.
