Strawberry season has arrived, and that means one of the first fresh fruits of the year is finally available. It’s an exciting time for strawberry lovers!
Maybe you picked up a basket of beautiful locally grown strawberries at a farmers market, or perhaps you visited a pick-your-own farm and carefully brought home a large batch of fresh berries.
You have already washed and enjoyed a few, but now you are wondering what to do with the rest. With the right storage methods, you can keep your strawberries fresh longer and enjoy them in many different ways.
How to Keep Strawberries Fresh for a Longer Time
The most important rule is simple: do not wash strawberries until you are ready to eat them or use them in a recipe.
Strawberries absorb water easily, almost like tiny sponges. Once they take in extra moisture, they become softer more quickly and are more likely to develop mold, even if you carefully dry them afterward.
When you bring strawberries home, it is best to store them unwashed. Teach your family to rinse only the amount they plan to eat at the moment. This small habit helps preserve their texture, flavor, and freshness.
Should Strawberries Be Stored in the Refrigerator or on the Counter?
The best storage method depends on when you plan to use your strawberries.
If you are going to eat or cook with them within a day and your kitchen is relatively cool, leaving them at room temperature is fine.
However, if you want to keep them for one or two more days, storing them in the refrigerator is the better option. Cooler temperatures help slow down spoilage and keep the berries firm.
Should You Remove Strawberries From Their Original Container?
Yes. Taking strawberries out of the plastic container they come in is one of the best ways to extend their freshness.
Instead, use a shallow glass container and line the bottom with paper towels. Arrange the strawberries in a single layer, leaving enough space between them so air can circulate.
Avoid stacking too many berries together. Add another paper towel on top if you want to create another layer, then place more strawberries carefully without overcrowding them.
Cover the container with a lid or plastic wrap and store it in the refrigerator until you are ready to use the berries.
When stored this way, very fresh strawberries can stay good for several days. The paper towels help absorb extra moisture, which reduces the chance of the berries becoming soft or moldy.
How to Store Strawberries for Long-Term Use
If you have more strawberries than you can use within a few days, freezing them is usually the best choice.
Frozen strawberries are extremely versatile. They can be blended into smoothies, cooked into sauces, baked into pies, cakes, and tarts, or turned into homemade jam and other desserts.
The great thing is that freezing strawberries does not require a large amount of preparation.
The Best Way to Freeze Strawberries
A dry-pack method works especially well for small fruits like strawberries because it helps preserve their natural quality without adding sugar.
Choose fully ripe strawberries that are firm and have a deep red color. Remove any fruit that is underripe, damaged, or spoiled.
Wash the strawberries, remove the green tops, and place them into a freezer-safe container. Seal the container tightly and freeze.
Using the Tray-Pack Freezing Method
Another option is the tray-pack method, which makes it easier to remove individual strawberries later.
Spread prepared strawberries in a single layer on a shallow tray and freeze them until solid. Once frozen, quickly transfer the berries into freezer containers or bags and return them to the freezer.
Because the berries freeze separately, they will not stick together as one large block. You can take out only the amount you need and reseal the package afterward.
Be sure to package the strawberries as soon as they are frozen to help prevent freezer burn and maintain their quality.
Enjoy Fresh Strawberries While They Last
Fresh strawberries are only available for a limited time, so now is the perfect opportunity to enjoy them at their best.
Locally grown Arkansas strawberries can be found on Saturdays at the Gateway Farmers’ Market in downtown Texarkana. Since strawberry season moves quickly, make sure to get yours while they are still available!
