Who doesn’t love penguins? These adorable creatures overflow with cuteness—whether waddling, swimming, nesting, or napping, they’re a delight to watch. I’ve been lucky enough to encounter 5 penguin species up close, and each one is absolutely amazing!

1. The Jackass Penguin

The name says it all—these penguins make braying sounds just like donkeys! Also known as African Penguins or Black-Footed Penguins, they’re exclusive to the southern African coast: think Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town (near Cape Town, South Africa) and Namibia. Standing around 2 feet tall (under 1 meter) and weighing roughly 5 pounds, they’re lightweight and compact.
Once numbering over 4 million in the late 1900s, their wild population has plummeted to fewer than 55,000, confined to just two locations. They’re also kept in zoos and marine aquariums. Endangered and at risk of extinction without intervention, these penguins are utterly addictive—especially when they let out their “hee-haw” calls!

2. The Chinstrap Penguin

Their name is self-explanatory, thanks to the distinctive black band that looks like a chinstrap. Slightly over 2 feet tall, they’re heavier than Jackass Penguins, with extra blubber to withstand Antarctica’s freezing temperatures. The best part? Their population exceeds 8 million, with breeding colonies in Antarctica, Argentina, Chile, the Falklands, and South Georgia Islands (the southern ocean one, not the U.S. state). Pure, unadulterated cuteness!

3. Gentoo Penguins

Gentoo Penguins are full of personality—energetic, ubiquitous, and largely unbothered by human visitors to their breeding grounds. I crossed paths with them multiple times, particularly on Danco Island and Brown Bluff. They strut with purpose, letting out loud trumpeting calls with heads thrown back.
As the fastest-swimming penguins, my travel companion Annie and I spent hours watching them “porpoise” (leap through the water) right outside our window. With bright orange bills and feet, they’re hard to miss. Gentoos are fiercely protective of their stone-ringed nests—males build elaborate nests to attract mates, and some lazy ones even steal stones from neighbors, sparking lively scuffles!
The third-largest penguin species, they grow up to nearly 3 feet tall and weigh a maximum of 19 pounds. These bold birds strut around like they own the place—and honestly, they kind of do!

4. The Adélie Penguin

Adélie Penguins are pure entertainment—where one goes, the whole colony follows. Their synchronized marches at Brown Bluff were incredible to watch: skittish, tightly huddled, and endlessly fun. With their classic tuxedo-like plumage, they’re the epitome of penguin charm.
Standing around 2 feet tall and weighing up to 13 pounds, they’re abundant in Antarctica. At Brown Bluff alone, we spotted 60,000 breeding pairs—truly a delightful sight!

5. The Emperor Penguin

Encountering Emperor Penguins was a true gift. As the largest penguin species, they stand 4 feet tall and can weigh up to 100 pounds. What’s remarkable? They nest in the dead of Antarctic winter—enduring total darkness and extreme cold to care for their eggs and chicks.
We spotted a few during our trip, and the entire ship’s crew gathered on deck to watch them. The photos look like they have a artificial background, but that’s just the snow-covered Antarctic landscape! Watching these majestic birds from a distance was an absolute thrill.
