Kyiv's Motherland Monument, towering over the city, is one of Ukraine's most iconic landmarks, symbolizing strength and resilience. The monument has sparked numerous discussions, particularly with the ongoing change of its Soviet-era symbolism to something more reflective of modern Ukraine. Here are eight intriguing facts about this colossal structure that might surprise even the locals.

1. Taller Than the Statue of Liberty

Standing at an impressive height of 102 meters, Kyiv’s Motherland Monument is taller than the Statue of Liberty, which measures 93 meters in total height. The sword of the monument alone reaches 62 meters high. The sheer scale of the monument is one of the primary reasons it has become a symbol of Ukraine’s strength.

2. Grand Proportions

The dimensions of the Motherland Monument are extraordinary. Its sword spans 16 meters, while the shield is 13 meters high and 8 meters wide. When it was being built, cranes that reached 100 meters in height were required to install the monument, marking it as the first Soviet structure of such monumental proportions.

3. The Sword Was Shortened

Initially, the sword of the Motherland Monument was designed to be taller. However, due to a request from the Kyiv Metropolitan, it was shortened to ensure that the monument did not surpass the height of the Great Lavra Bell Tower. As a result, the monument’s sword now stands 12 meters lower than the tallest point of the Lavra.

4. Adjusting the Proportions

While constructing the monument, architects realized that the nose of the Motherland statue was too short and had to be modified to improve its facial proportions. Additionally, they noticed that the statue's breasts appeared asymmetrical. Designers later explained that this was due to anatomical differences: when a woman raises her arms, the breasts stretch and become uneven, which is reflected in the monument’s design.

5. A Play on Words: Victoria Petrivna

Originally known as the Victory Monument, the Motherland Monument is often referred to by a more playful name—Victoria Petrivna. This name has a double meaning: "Victoria" symbolizes "victory" in Latin, while "Petrivna" comes from the full name of Leonid Brezhnev's wife, Victoria Petrivna Brezhneva, highlighting the Soviet connection and adding a layer of historical irony.

6. The Monument’s Prototype

The monument’s design was created by Soviet artist Vasyl Borodai, with early sketches from 1972 by Yevhen Vuchetych. Interestingly, the design was inspired by the artist Nina Danyleiko, who became the model for the statue’s features. Her image is said to have shaped the iconic form of the Motherland statue.

7. Built to Last 150 Years

The Motherland Monument was designed with durability in mind. The architects envisioned it standing for at least 150 years. It was built to withstand a magnitude-nine earthquake and high winds, which means that it can endure a range of natural disasters. After 42 years, the monument continues to stand strong, a testament to the vision of its creators.

8. Replacing Soviet Symbols

In a significant move, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine is replacing the Soviet coat of arms on the monument with the Ukrainian trident (the official national emblem). This change was announced ahead of Ukraine's Independence Day in 2023, and the USSR emblem has already been removed. The trident will be made of two types of metal, stainless steel and foreign-produced steel, to ensure durability and a lasting connection to Ukrainian identity.

Conclusion

The Motherland Monument in Kyiv is more than just an architectural marvel; it is a symbol of Ukraine's strength and resilience. From its impressive dimensions to its historical and cultural significance, the monument continues to captivate visitors and locals alike. The ongoing transformation of its symbolism further underscores Ukraine’s evolving identity, making it an important landmark for both historical reflection and national pride.
