A moose can often be seen crossing a mountain lake, paddling toward the forested shore. As it leaves the water, droplets fall from its massive antlers, which can measure nearly six feet (1.8 meters) across. Once it reaches land, the animal disappears among the surrounding trees.
With a body weight approaching 2,000 pounds (900 kilograms), the moose is the largest species in the deer family and ranks among the most remarkable mammals inhabiting northern forests.
A Champion of Extreme Weather
Moose primarily live in areas characterized by long, severe winters and substantial snowfall. Their broad, powerful hooves function much like built-in snowshoes, helping them cross deep snow with greater ease. The same sturdy feet are also useful when the snow melts, allowing moose to navigate muddy wetlands and other soft terrain.
As temperatures rise and frozen waterways begin to thaw, moose frequently enter lakes and rivers to escape the heat. They are excellent swimmers and are capable of covering more than 10 miles in the water without taking a break.
Despite their bulky appearance, moose can move remarkably quickly on land. An adult can reach roughly 35 miles per hour in short bursts and can sustain speeds of about 20 miles per hour when traveling over greater distances.
Moose maintain a plant-based diet throughout the year. Their food includes leaves, stems, twigs, and bark collected from shrubs and smaller trees. Their enormous bodies require substantial quantities of vegetation, and an individual moose may eat as much as 70 pounds of plant material in one day.
The Story Behind Their Giant Antlers
Only male moose, known as bulls, develop antlers. Growth begins in early spring, and the antlers become especially important during the breeding season, when males compete against rivals for opportunities to mate with females.
Moose antlers are broad and flattened, with pointed projections along their edges. These structures can be used as weapons when competing males clash. Female moose, commonly called cows, never develop antlers.
Once the breeding period is over in autumn, bulls shed their antlers. They then return to a mostly solitary existence and remain that way until the next breeding season.
Female moose generally give birth to one or two calves during spring. The young stay alongside their mothers for roughly a year, remaining protected by them until the following breeding season begins.
Threats to Moose
Because adult moose are exceptionally large animals, they have relatively few natural predators. Young calves, however, are much more vulnerable and may be hunted by bears, wolves, and cougars.
For mature moose, some of the most serious dangers now come from human activity rather than other wildlife. Collisions with vehicles are a major cause of mortality, particularly in regions where highways and roads cross areas inhabited by moose.
