Pocket Library

I have a deep passion for painting flowers in watercolor. Many people are amazed at how bright, dimensional, and lifelike floral watercolor paintings can appear, and I’m often asked how I achieve these results.

The answer lies in my personal approach—the wet-on-dry technique.

By building up multiple layers, you can create rich textures, vivid colors, and a strong sense of depth in your work, especially when painting flowers. This layered method has helped me earn awards and has been shared with more than 15,000 students through Nature Studio.

It’s an especially effective technique for floral subjects. If you’re just starting out, it’s best to begin with simple flowers to understand the method. Once you’re comfortable, you can move on to more detailed and realistic blooms.

Below are five of my favorite beginner-friendly watercolor flower mini classes. Each one gives a quick overview of my process. (More detailed step-by-step tutorials are available through Nature Studio membership.)

Sunflower

Painting a sunflower is a wonderful way to explore bright, cheerful yellows. It’s also incredibly satisfying to capture the soft, textured center of the flower. In this lesson, I walk through the basic steps to create your own sunflower painting.

Rose

Roses are full of depth and elegance, making them a rewarding subject. Because of their layered petals, it’s important to spend time on your initial sketch before applying paint. This class introduces my approach to building a realistic rose in watercolor.

Bluebell

Blue flowers have a calming, peaceful quality. Bluebells, with their delicate, drooping shapes, are especially enjoyable to paint. This lesson focuses on capturing their subtle shine and three-dimensional form.

African Daisy

Also known as Osteospermum, the African daisy offers strong contrast between its dark center and vibrant pink-purple petals. This makes it perfect for practicing tonal variation and achieving a sense of depth. I demonstrate how to use a full value range to bring this flower to life.

Hydrangea

As your skills improve, you can begin tackling more complex flowers like hydrangeas. Although they look intricate, each bloom is made up of many small, simple shapes. By learning how to paint a few individual flowers, you can apply the same technique to complete the entire cluster.

Looking for more watercolor flower lessons

If you enjoyed these mini classes, there are many more available. On my blog, you’ll find lessons on painting tulips, daffodils, cherry blossoms, orchids, and more.

For those who want deeper instruction, Nature Studio offers a wide range of tutorials for all skill levels, from beginners to advanced artists.

If your goal is to paint realistic watercolor flowers, mastering the wet-on-dry technique is the perfect starting point. There are also free full-length classes available where you can learn this method step by step using simple subjects.

Give it a try and start your watercolor journey today.

Amazing Places to See Along the Washington Coast

Amazing Places to See Along the Washington Coast

Wild, rugged, and wonderfully isolated, the Washington Coast offers a breathtaking journey with every mile traveled along U.S. Route 101, from the mouth of the Columbia River to the farthest reaches of the Olympic Peninsula. Unlike many popular coastal destinations, this region remains largely untouched, with only a handful of small communities scattered along the shoreline. The lack of development allows visitors to enjoy true solitude, peaceful landscapes, and the dramatic beauty of the Pacific Northwest.

A New Perspective on Landscape Art: 10 Landmark Paintings

A New Perspective on Landscape Art: 10 Landmark Paintings

For centuries, scenes of nature struggled to earn their place among established artistic themes. It wasn't until the 1600s that depictions of the natural world gained equal footing with historical narratives, portraiture, and still lifes. The 1800s marked a pivotal era, especially with the emergence of the Barbizon painters around 1830, who embraced the outdoors as their open studio. Landscapes transformed from mere backdrops to central subjects, celebrated for their raw beauty and evocative power. From woodland groves to coastal cliffs and cultivated plains, artists used these environments to convey emotion, philosophy, and prophecy. Below are ten essential works that showcase the evolution of landscape painting—each offering its own window into a different world.
