Baisha Beach, also known as Bai Sha Wan, is one of the most beloved seaside destinations among both locals and foreign residents visiting Kending. Its popularity comes from several factors, including its beautiful location, high-quality sandy shoreline, and the laid-back coastal lifestyle surrounding it. The beach gained even more international attention after appearing in several scenes of Taiwanese director Ang Lee’s famous film “Life of Pi.”

The Changing Atmosphere of Baisha Beach

Before Baisha Beach became widely known among Taiwanese tourists, many expatriates living in Taiwan enjoyed its soft white sand, clear blue water, shallow swimming areas, and peaceful surroundings. The beach was once a quiet hidden paradise where visitors could relax without large crowds. The sunsets were especially beautiful, and camping directly on the beach was once allowed.

Over time, more travelers from northern Taiwan discovered the charm of Baisha Beach and began visiting regularly. As its reputation grew, the quiet atmosphere gradually changed.

Today, Baisha Beach remains a wonderful place to visit, although it is much busier during weekends and public holidays. Colorful umbrellas now line the beach, restaurants have opened nearby, and camping directly on the sand is no longer permitted. During the day, the peaceful sound of the waves is often mixed with the noise of jet skis, banana boats, and water activities.

However, these changes do not take away from the beach’s appeal. The restaurants add convenience, and umbrellas provide welcome shade from Taiwan’s strong sunshine. On weekdays and near sunset, the water activities become much quieter. The sea remains excellent for swimming, and the evening views continue to be breathtaking.

Where Is Baisha Beach Located?

Although many visitors associate Baisha Beach with Kending, the beach is actually located outside the main Kending area. Before entering Kending on Route 26, travelers will find a large 7-Eleven and the entrance to Nangang Road.

From there, follow the road uphill and turn left when the route continues. Signs pointing toward Baisha Beach will appear along the way. The drive takes approximately five to ten minutes along a pleasant countryside road. Eventually, visitors will reach parking areas and campsites on the left side, with the White Hotel located on the right. This marks the arrival at Baisha Beach.

Things to Do at Baisha Beach

Baisha Beach is an ideal place for travelers who want to slow down and enjoy a relaxing seaside experience. Visitors can swim, sunbathe, watch people passing by, enjoy the scenery, camp nearby, or spend a quiet evening beside the ocean.

Several beachfront restaurants operate in the area, many managed by the Happy Panda group, which also organizes camping facilities and recreational activities. The beach area provides plenty of options for food, drinks, and basic beach supplies.

There are also several accommodation choices nearby. The White Hotel is one of the well-known places to stay, while Happy Panda operates a large campground with ready-made tents available for rental. The camping area includes essential facilities such as showers and bathrooms, making it convenient for visitors who want to stay overnight.

Travelers staying at Baisha Beach should remember that it is still around a 20-minute drive from Kending Night Market. Many visitors choose accommodation here specifically because it offers a quieter and less crowded alternative to staying in central Kending.

Food, Camping, and Coastal Activities

The beachfront area includes restaurants, camping spaces, and small shops selling local snacks and items needed for a beach visit. Visitors can easily find drinks, casual meals, seafood dishes, and Taiwanese specialties while enjoying the ocean views.

Some local restaurants serve fresh seafood and traditional Taiwanese cuisine, giving travelers a chance to experience regional flavors after spending time on the beach.

Baisha Beach and the surrounding Kending area have also become popular filming locations. Besides “Life of Pi,” the famous Taiwanese movie “Cape No. 7” also featured Kending’s beautiful coastal landscapes, further adding to the area’s cultural appeal.

With its combination of golden sand, clear water, relaxed atmosphere, and convenient facilities, Baisha Beach remains one of the most enjoyable seaside escapes in southern Taiwan.

Lighthouse keepers were the maritime equivalent of air traffic controllers, ensuring vessels reached their destinations safely. Today, electronic navigation systems have largely replaced them, yet lighthouses remain as historic, picturesque landmarks—symbols of maritime heritage and captivating coastal scenery.

Why Flamingos Stand on One Leg: The Science Behind Nature’s Most Graceful Adaptation

Why Flamingos Stand on One Leg: The Science Behind Nature’s Most Graceful Adaptation

Few creatures embody the elegance of the natural world like the flamingo. With their vivid pink plumage, sinuous S-shaped necks, and iconic one-legged stance, these wading birds have captivated human curiosity for millennia. Found across the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe, the six species of Phoenicopteridae family thrive in shallow lakes, lagoons, and coastal wetlands, where they gather in massive flocks that paint the water’s surface with strokes of rose and coral. Their distinctive coloration, a result of carotenoid-rich diets of algae, brine shrimp, and aquatic invertebrates, is just one of their many remarkable adaptations. Yet none is more puzzling—or more fascinating—than their habit of standing on a single slender leg for hours on end, often while resting or feeding. This behavior, observed in flamingos of all ages and species, is far from a mere quirk; it is a masterclass in evolutionary engineering, shaped by millions of years of natural selection to solve critical biological challenges. In this exploration, we unravel the scientific mysteries behind this graceful posture, from energy efficiency to temperature regulation, and discover how it has become a cornerstone of the flamingo’s survival.

Essential Techniques for Mastering Homemade Egg Tarts

Essential Techniques for Mastering Homemade Egg Tarts

While various types of egg tarts exist globally, the Hong Kong-style tart, or daan tat, is distinct for its smooth, glassy appearance and delicate flavor. Unlike the caramelized, yolk-heavy Portuguese pastéis de nata, the Hong Kong version uses whole eggs and milk to create a lighter custard that remains unblemished after baking. Understanding these nuances is the first step toward replicating the authentic bakery experience in your own kitchen.
